Firearm safety
- Treat all guns as if they are loaded and keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction.
- Keep your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.
- Only point the muzzle at what you intend to shoot.
- Always be certain of your target and what is beyond it before taking a shot.
- Unload firearms when not in use and unload them when climbing a tree, crossing a fence, or traversing difficult terrain.
- Never use alcohol or drugs that could impair judgment before or while hunting.Â
Visibility and awareness
- Wear plenty of hunter orange to be seen by other hunters. A blaze orange hat and vest are required in many states.
- Never shoot at sounds or movement alone, as it could be another hunter.
- Stay aware of your surroundings and other hunters in the area.
- Know the boundaries of the land you are hunting on, including private property lines, roads, and livestock.
- Do not wear any white clothing, as it can be mistaken for a deer’s tail.Â
Other important safety measures
- Plan for the weather and dress in layers. Be aware of conditions like hypothermia and dress to stay dry.
- Inform someone of your plans, including where you are hunting and when you expect to return.
- Wear hearing and eye protection to protect yourself from loud noises and flying particles.
- Inspect your equipment to ensure it is in good working order.
- Consider not hunting alone to have assistance in case of an emergency
